Nikhil Patel, Associate

Nikhil is a business builder and attorney with a unique combination of intellectual property (IP), business, and engineering experience.

Nikhil has dedicated his extensive legal career to guiding technology companies and university engineering centers through the development, management, protection, and enforcement of intellectual property rights. He provides high value IP services for clients who value IP by drafting and prosecuting patent applications from strategic business or licensing perspectives, as applicable. He also assists clients with intellectual property matters relating to patent litigation, written and oral opinions, trademark prosecution and oppositions, copyright law, trade secret law, licensing, domain name disputes, sale and licensing of intellectual property assets, and associated counseling strategies.

Nikhil also has strong ties with the venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) community of Boston. As a former director of a wireless technology venture fund, Nikhil developed strategic IP assets for portfolio companies that were key to their large exit valuations.

Based on his VC and PE experience, Nikhil understands how to position early stage companies' technology to help their fund-raising endeavors. Accordingly, Nikhil takes a partnership approach to client matters, often personally serving on patent committees and advising on successful and cost-effective U.S. and international patent strategies aimed to support a client's unique and specific business goals.

Nikhil's clients also benefit from his personal industry experience and entrepreneurial background. Prior to joining the firm, Nikhil worked as an engineer for Textron systems and worked on unmanned tracking systems. Nikhil's technology background includes a wide range of diverse engineering technologies, such as motion control systems, process control systems, radar systems, robotics, autonomous vehicles, telecommunications, optics and opto-electronics, signal processing, image processing, and voice processing. He also has experience in networking, cloud-based technologies, business methods, software, SAAS technologies, GPS systems, antennas, as well as mobile, medical, and mechanical devices. Additionally, in his career, Nikhil has worked with nano-materials, semiconductors, renewable energy systems, artificial intelligence such as neural networks, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Nikhil also serves as an advisor to several startups and has developed business plans and corresponding partnership and intellectual property strategies to capture market share.
